Eleven of us decided to risk the smoke today and headed to Mt. McLoughlin. When we arrived at the trailhead, it seemed clear enough to attempt the climb. So off we went around 7:40 AM.
There were a few mosquitos along the way, but they did not get bad. The first 3.5 miles are up, but relatively flat compared with the next 1.5 miles. As we headed up the ridge below the last pitch to the top, we did encounter some smoke and all of us discussed whether to proceed or not, but the group decided to continue.
Turned out that the winds changed and it was relatively clear on top, although the view was of many smoked in areas. Of the 11 hikers, 8 made it to the top. Turned out there were many butterflies on top and below that layer, many big dragonflies. No one knew why the butterflies were so prevalent on top or what they ate to survive. For many hikers, this was their first time up the mountain, so it was nice to see them succeed.
Refreshments and our celebration for the hikers who conquered the mountain were taken at the Lake of the Woods Lodge. Fries and onion rings were great.
