Mt. Eddy 7-21-21

Photos by Barry, Keeley and Leslie

Five of us headed south to see the top of Mt. Eddy.  For some strange reason there was no smoke in the area and a high of 65 degrees was forecasted. Since we only had one car we could not do the normal shuttle hike and no one wanted to hike up hill at the end the 1.2 miles on the asphalt.

We did pass (so they passed us in the PM) 12 PCT hikers.  Eight started in Mexico, 2 started at the Sonora Pass in California and 2 started in Dunsmuir.  We also encounter a group of 10 hikers that looked like they were part of an organized hike, with half from Sacramento and half from Portland.  We did see a big filed of the Darlingtonia Californica plants on the way up, which was the first time I have seen them outside the lower valley.  We were also surprised at the quantity of flowers along the trail given the time of the year.

Lunch was on top as expected but we all had to put on our shells to stay warm.  We were also entertained by a group of Redtail Hawks playing in the thermals.  Since I forgot to bring chocolate, June stepped in with a few M&M’s to save the day.

It turned out to be a really fun hike, with lots of discussion to distract us from the challenge of hiking.
