Deadfall Lakes 6-28-21

The Cook and Green hike was changed to Deadfall Lakes because the weather forecast called for much cooler weather there. It seemed strange they could be so different but there may be an explanation. A meteorologist said we are under a high pressure dome that extends to Northern Alberta.

We climbed Siskiyou Pass and hit 96 degrees at the top. As we descended into California the temperature dropped instead of increasing as expected. So perhaps Mount Ashland was the south end of the dome. We were later treated to a view of the Lava Fire which was on the north side of Mount Shasta

The temperature rose to the high 80s but by the time we reached the pass at 6,000 feet it had dropped to 83 degrees, with a nice breeze. Hiking was comfortable but we took a few respites in the shade on the last steep mile.

When we came over a ridge to the first lake we were greeted by a strong wind that could remove headgear. A bit farther on we stopped for lunch at Upper Deadfall Lake and this time we were in a cool breeze. Lunch was relaxing in the breeze and Sunny got her toes wet.

Note: I took note of distances. It is 2.9 miles from the Parks Creek TH to the intersection with the trail to the lower Meadows TH. It is only 1.1 miles from there to Upper Deadfall Lake. Total ascent was 1,100 feet.

The hike back down went quickly. On the way down to the I5 we had a full view of the Lava Fire, which had spread out during the day. We stopped to take pictures and were disappointed to see the wind was pushing the smoke north towards Ashland. Our impression was the fire would get much bigger before being controlled, especially with strong winds.

With nothing open on Mondays, we enjoyed refreshments at Kerr Manor.
