On Wednesday we had 9 people come out to hike to Deadfall Lakes and Mount Eddy from the Park's Creek trailhead. It was already 79° when we started our hike a little after 9:30 AM.
The first 3 miles are along the PCT. We had views towards the Black Marbles and other surrounding mountains. There were lots of wildflowers and some wet areas to cross. When we got to the Deadfall Lakes trail, we turned left. We made our way up and stopped in the shade of a large tree to have a snack break.
We next started the first big climb to the smaller lake and took a short break. We then went on to Upper Deadfall Lake where Barb had planned to hang out while the rest of us made our way to the summit.
We climbed to the saddle for one more break before starting the 16 switchbacks. My technique was to keep going slow and steady. Others took short breaks along the way. I watched and cheered on each person that made it to the top. Nanci was up next, followed shortly after by Barry. A few minutes later Marilyn made it to the summit, a couple more minutes and June arrived followed by Scott. Then about 7 minutes later here came Mike who is an impressive 86 years young with his birthday later this month. He let us know Liz wasn't feeling great so was going to take a rest.
We had our lunch with a great view of Mount Shasta and Black Butte. Some started going back down when we heard that Liz decided she was going to head up to the summit. Mike stayed with her pack and Nanci and I waited for her at the top. I was so proud of everyone making it to the summit in the heat. Liz and I checked out 2 less common flowers on the way back down. The Shasta Fireweed and Rough Harebell We headed back down the trail and rejoined Barb at the lake. We then headed back to the junction with the PCT. Many of us got handkerchiefs or buffs wet in the cool stream. I dunked my whole head, sunglasses and all. Everyone was happy we had a relatively flat trail to navigate instead of the steeper trail to the Deadfall Meadows. When we got back to the cars, Liz had fresh plums to share with everyone. We had hiked 11.14 miles and gained 2,356 feet elevation
