Little Grayback to Squaw Peak 2-6-13

The trip to the TH was eventful today. We hit a bit of black ice on Pioneer Road and did a 180 across both lanes. Fortunately, the oncoming traffic stopped in time and there were no injuries or property damage.

Trail conditions have deteriorated considerably since our last hike here in April 2012. Lots of downed branches and trees across the trail along with brush blocking the trail in many places. We moved what we could by hand but the trail needs a fair amount of work with a chainsaw. There were also patches of snow on the shady inside corners of the trail.

Five of the eight of us decided to go on to Squaw Peak from Hanley Gap. The road up was perhaps 1/2 covered with snow but it was fairly firm and walking was OK. However, we did not reach the lookout until just before 1 PM.

Refreshments were taken at the Country Club.
