Eleven adventurous hikers set out to make it to Echo Lake, a 3,000 foot vertical climb in 4.5 miles. The good news, we all made it with just a touch of moaning and groaning.
We started our hike in low 60 degree weather and finished it in mid 70’s. The trail had some deadfall along the way, which was challenging when the logs are 3 feet in diameter and we were below them on a steep trail. However, everyone made it through the gauntlet and arrived at Echo Lake in good spirits and hungry.
This is a spectacular place, with snow wrapping about 1/3 of the lake, rock cliffs on two sides and a nice waterfall on one side. Sabin decided he had extra energy, so he hiked to the top of the cliffs above Echo Lake (an extra mile and a half with another 450' of elevation change) to where the PCT passes very close. He gets much extra credit for his adventure.
Poison Oak was present during the first 1,000 feet, then replaced by some flowers, including blooming Bear Grass, lilies, columbine and many others. Our first snow was at 5,300 feet, but none on the trail.
After a very long and enjoyable lunch, we decided it was time to head down the hill. Refreshments were taken at Boomtown Cafe.
