It was a perfect day for Oregon Sunshine and Rosey Plectritis. The temperature was ideal with a slight cooling breeze and the views clear to Mt. Shasta.
Thirteen of us trekked up the Grizzly Peak trail through meadows of Polemonium and Candy Flower. We admired the stone pile at the high point of almost 6,000’. There were a few downed logs. One hiker scratched his foot on a log, and another hiker immediately used her wilderness training to apply a bandage.
We followed the lollipop trail around to views of the Rogue Valley, Ashland and Mt. Shasta. House wrens, lazuli buntings and green tailed towhees sang loudly. Socorro was a perfect Sweep. As we came down the Grizzly Peak Trail we remarked how peaceful and beautiful it is to hike with friends on this mountain only 15 miles from Ashland.
Mileage: 5.4 miles, 600’ elevation gain. But do be careful of the huge pothole in the road near the trailhead parking.
