Great day for a hike with temperatures in the 60s although it felt a bit hotter going uphill and when we were exposed to the sun on the rock scramble going up and in the meadow coming down. The drive to the trailhead was uneventful. However, NF 1005 is still in rough shape, although passable with high clearance vehicles.
When we got to Windy Gap the group split into two, with one group doing a diagonal up across the rock face and the other group heading towards the ridge but avoiding the false summits. The ridge group won the race.
Lunch was taken on the summit and then we started down, stopping for a brief rest at the cabin. Further down, one of the hikers did a 180o after tripping on a root but refused to reenact the event for posterity. The hiker suffered only minor surface damage.
Refreshments were taken at Boomtown.
