Collings Mountain 2-8-17

Photos by Mike

Your correspondent was concerned that a rainy day and the planned 2500 foot ascent of Collings Mountain might deter attendance, and indeed with only minutes left to the appointed departure it seemed the group pic might be a selfie. The core members of the Wednesday group were indisposed, absent or still eating their morning Gerbers. Suddenly a Merc appeared with that man among men and conqueror of Denali, Mike Sanson.

We located the 2 trailheads but decided that a shuttle might prove difficult with only one car so we did an up and back from the second trailhead near the campground. The weather cooperated as much as could be expected, except for lunch where the gods went against us. There were a few minor deadfalls but with a combination of limbo moves, hurdling, and one crawl they were easily crossed. Mike displayed his early track and field training with a two polled vault over a pool of water that I crossed by skipping from log to log in very precarious fashion.

After lunch near the summit we descended at an incredible velocity with Mike in the lead. He is particularly quick when he smells the stable (or the Merc in this case). We had a few good views of the Lake through the mist as we galloped down the hill. We arrived at Boomtown damp but exhilarated, as well as somewhat smug about our achievement versus lesser beings. Our dear waitress took the group pic with us hoisting Ashland Ambers. A fitting end to the day.
