By pure chance, Wednesday turned out to be a perfect hiking day. It started in the low 60’s and ended up in the mid 70’s with few clouds in the sky. We drove to the trailhead and began hiking up the Flume Trail, then east along the PCT on our way to Indian Springs at the base of the large granite slabs near the top of the Castle Crags for lunch.
There were many active creeks running across the trail as we climbed up through the forest. Crossing a couple of them proved to be difficult, but the team did a masterful job in overcoming the challenges. Mt. Shasta could be seen, covered in white and shown in all its glory. Lunch was delightful, with several springs dripping nearby over thick moss, plenty of places to sit and lots of shade from the sun.
After an enjoyable lunch, we headed back down to the cars, taking refreshments on the outside patio at Jefferson’s Roadhouse in Yreka.
