Aspen Butte 9-27-17

 Photos by Dan and Keeley

Ten hikers set off to climb up Aspen Butte, an old caldera located just west of Klamath Lake.  The weather was perfect, cool but sunny.  Hans from Klamath joined us and Jim Wayman was our leader on this new hike.

We found the cutoff (lowering the hike to 11 miles) and stopped at a great overlook where we could see Harriette and Klamath Lakes.  We then headed on up to the top of Aspen Butte, where we could see (yes, no smoke) from Mt. Shasta at 63 miles to Mt. McLoughlin at 15 miles, to Mt. Theilsen at 58 miles and Mt. Scott at 42 miles, as well as all of Klamath Lake.  The views were spectacular and we had a long lunch to absorb it all.

Although the 11 mile distance and the almost 2,500 vertical feet were tough, everyone agreed this should be a regular hike.  Thanks to Jim Wayman for suggesting the hike and leading the way.

Refreshments were taken at Caldera Brewing.  It was a good day!
