On Wednesday we had 5 hikers come out to brave the big change in weather and hike to Puck Lakes in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. We started hiking a little after 10:30am and there were some low clouds and it was raining lightly. After a short time, we needed to make a wardrobe adjustment since most of the elevation is at the first part of the hike.
We could see that there was some recent tree fall that had been cut clear of the trail because the wood was still bright yellowish which made it a very easy trail to hike. As we went along, we started to see some blue sky. We then made our turn to the bigger Puck Lake. The clouds came back in and we made our way around to the smaller Puck Lake where we had our lunch. Since Hank joined us, we thought we would have a Hank Lunch.
Michael H had a huge breakfast burrito and it took a little longer for lunch. Hank suggested that we might have to call the mid length lunch a Michael H lunch.
After lunch, we headed the rest of the way around the bigger Puck Lake. Sometimes the trail was obvious and other times we had to guess because of some tree downfall. We made it around and back to the main trail. From there we headed back and got to our cars around 2 PM. We had hiked 6.10 miles and gained around 810 feet of elevation.
Scott and Hank headed back home. Sherry, Michael H and I drove down Clover Creek Road about 8 miles to see if the Larch Trees were yellow yet. They were just starting to turn. The needles will drop off and then regrow in the spring.
