Ashland Hiking Home

There’s nothing like an easy Wednesday hike to bring together a large group of hikers. Fourteen of us took to the trail on this cloudy but warm winter day, with temperatures in the 40s–50s and only a couple of brief flurries of raindrops. With such a large group, social enthusiasm ruled the day, with frequent stops to keep everyone together. Having a sweep and using walkie-talkies proved to be a great asset.

Overall, trail conditions were dry, with the exception of one anticipated seep area, and we encountered only a couple of small downed trees along the trail. As a sign of our warm winter, we spotted two flowers along the way: the usual snow queen and what may have been a false dandelion. After stopping to enjoy the viewpoint, we hiked on to the overlook of the borrow pit for lunch.

On our return, we made another stop at the viewpoint for a group photo, then strolled down the descending trail back to the cars.
