Lake Siskiyou Scouting Hike 10-15-21

Photos by Randy and Rich

A scouting hike that had to be put off for months due to smoke from wildfires came together Friday beneath the peaks of Mt Shasta and Mt Eddy.

An 8 AM start had us at the TH by 9:30. This is a 7.4 mile mostly level loop around the reservoir with dramatic views of surrounding peaks.

The main source for water filling the lake is the Sacramento River, which is spring fed from Mt Shasta, and in a drought year looks like a small creek coming in. Seasonal bridges are placed over the creeks at the rocky end of the lake. They are removed by November as the river begins to grow towards spring runoff.

The trail around the lake is mostly forested but with open views down by the water. You go through the Siskiyou Lake Resort, by the boat launch, before returning to parking and can stop for ice cream, liquid refreshments, and a hot lunch during the summer tourist season.

The lake is a great destination for waterfowl as we saw ducks, geese, Herons, Egrets, white Pelicans and Cormorants who were sunbathing on the buoy stretched across the water in front of the Box Canyon Dam where the Sacramento River flows out.

After lots of stops for pictures and lunch we made it back to the cars by 1:30 having completed the circuit in 4 hours. And back in Ashland by 3 pm.
