Ashland Hiking Home

The day started with an extra early meeting at Rite Aid parking to sign up another new hike member. There have been about half a dozen so far this year. Welcome!

At 8:00 AM we departed Ashland with 4 SUVs to transport 14 hikers.

On this sunny Memorial Day, we traveled down I-5 and took the 738 Exit some 65 miles from the Rogue Valley. In ten more miles we reached our first hike destination down a dusty gravel road to parking for Faery Falls. The family at the parking lot told us how to get to the falls, hike up another rocky road for close to a mile then down to the base of the falls.

None of us had seen the falls before and it was indeed worth the trip. Faery Falls is a split fall that drops fifty feet into Ney Springs Creek with a blast of mist. We all scrambled down the steep trail to the base of the falls to take in its awesome display. After everyone got a chance to take pictures we headed back to the cars and our next hiking adventure.

A short drive back the way we came put us in parking for Lake Siskiyou. We thought we would make the 7-mile hike around the lake, but learned when we stopped at the lake map that the seasonal bridge across the Sacramento had not been laid down yet due to high water and strong currents. So we found a shady spot down by the lake and had lunch.

After lunch, we decided to head back since we had already gone three miles with three more miles back. Faery Falls added another 2 miles RT so 8 miles on this sunny day with about 500' of gain. Besides the fall we got great views of Shasta and Mt Eddy from the Siskiyou Trail.

We stopped for refreshments in Weed at the Mt. Shasta Brewery.

Happy Trails,
Rich
