Six people braved the smoke forecasts to show up for a smoke-free round-trip hike along the High Lakes Trail, starting at the Great Meadow. Along the way one of the vehicles gave a lift to a PCT thru hiker who was on his way to spend the day at the Fish Lake resort before resuming his trek on Tuesday. His feet had swollen so much on the way from the Mexican border that he had ordered larger sized boots in Ashland to be delivered to him at Crater Lake. Presumably he would have to suffer for a couple of days in his original boots, although he was wearing Keene-type sandals when we picked him up.
Post-hike refreshments were taken at the nearby Lake of the Woods resort, whose $5 entry fee is now non-refundable. Good option is to park along the road and walk some 200 meters to the restaurant. Smoke from the Canyonville fire began to appear as we were finishing our refreshments.
When the two drivers picked up their vehicles at the Great Meadow parking area, emergency personnel were not allowing additional vehicles into the lot in preparation for the landing of a helicopter fighting a fire near the top of Brown Mt. On Saturday, two of the hikers watched a helicopter scooping water out of Fish Lake in an obviously vain attempt to douse the fire.
