Ashland Hiking Home

Nine of us headed south to escape the smoke of the Rogue Valley.  We hiked from Kangaroo Lake to Bull Lake.  It turned out to be a wonderful, clear day with no smoke in the area, although there was lots of smoke as we drove to the trailhead.  The trail was perfect for us recovering from last week’s hike.  We did see one other couple on the trail for a few minutes, but they headed off trail, so basically we had the entire hike to ourselves.  Upon reaching the overlook to Bull Lake, we had great views of Mt. Shasta and Mt. Eddy.  At other points we had views of Mt. McLoughlin, Pilot Rock and Lover’s Leap.  There was much discussion as to which way on the PCT got you to Mt. Eddy, but we finally saw a sign that resolved the question.

June and Jerry went swimming, so the rest of us got to take some extra relaxation time during lunch.  We did learn what a Fen was and saw many patches of California Darlingtonia plants in Fens along the trail. One of us opened up a plant to see what it looked like inside (lots of dead bugs).  When we got back to the car, Leslie provided us with home grown grapes, which was a great hit.  Overall it was a great day.
