Hogan Lake 10-1-21

Friday we did a Bonus Hike into California trying to make up for hikes canceled due to smoke. Your three headed scouting team did manage to interest one veteran member of the AHG to join us on this excellent hike; so off we went from Rite Aid at 8:00 am.

The skies were clear with only some valley clinging smoke south of Mt Shasta from the Fawn fire. We were heading up and over Etna Summit to a sign a quarter mile down on the left announcing Taylor Lake 2 miles. After a sometimes bumpy ride we arrived at a nice paved parking area (6,250') with a potty!

The walk over to Taylor Lake is less than a half mile with immediate breathtaking views of this sunny mountain lake at 6,400' with granite walls rising on three sides.

Then we came back down the Taylor trail maybe 100 yards to the sign for Hogan Lake Trail (3.2 miles). You start on this trail crossing a dry creek, then follow the trail around the side of Taylor before it turns right uphill into a forest and comes out at Hogan trail summit at 6,900'. In the clearings we had great clear views of rugged mountain ranges to the north and west. Then it was a zigzag decent down 900' through two meadows to our shady lunch spot next to Hogan Lake (6,000'). Again all you can do upon arriving is stare at the beauty of this calm, peaceful mountain lake with cattails rising up on the shoreline and granite peaks rising on three sides.

We had a relaxed lunch listening to the quiet with the occasional distant cowbell from open range cattle.

After lunch, we headed back up the switchbacks with temps now in the 70s; then down the other side back to Taylor. Both of these lakes are great for swimming or just soaking your feet.

On this day we all had pizza on our minds so we headed back to Etna for great pizza and refreshments at Denny's Distillery. While there we counted up our life experience...298 years just short of the 300 club!

Note: Not to worry if you missed this hike...I will be sure to put it on the Monday schedule for 2022.

Happy Trails,
Rich, Jerry, Randy and Sabin
