I substituted this wonderful hike to get us out of the smoke in Southern Oregon. It worked. We arrived at the trailhead to a clear, sunny day at 77 degrees. 15 hikers made the trip.
We did the hike at decent speed but not pushing too much. There is a lot of ascent, some 2600 feet. Those new to the hike were astounded by the scenery. We did the ridge tour counter-clockwise which meant a tough hike up switchbacks to the ridge but everyone went at their own pace and we met on top. 5 minutes later we were at the perfect lunch spot with logs to sit on and fabulous views to the south.
After lunch we descended to the cross-over to the lakes. Everyone again went at their own pace and were told to turn left up to the ridge at the hole in the tree, which will be much further than you expect. On the PCT section we met a dozen PCT hikers and talked to a few.
We gathered again at East Boulder Lake and Sabin Phelps decided he was Michael Phelps and went for a short swim in his hiking outfit. Jerry Lafontain, not to be outdone, stripped to his couturier undies and went for a swim as well. Received a 6 point rating for his crawl.
Finally we all headed for Dotty's in Etna, only to be disappointed. There we were overwhelmed by 15 arriving at the same time and service was very slow. The fries were excellent but the beer selection was abysmal and they ran out of cold beer for the one that was drinkable. Those who went for shakes were happy. 4 people decided not to order and crossed the highway to a restaurant for dinner.
Back in Ashland we were hit hard by the smoke when we got out of the cars. It was simply awful. At least we escaped it for the day and everyone loved the hike. Note: the fire road was in pretty good shape, with some new gravel.
