Garfield Peak and Boundary Springs - Crater Lake National Park

Photos by Dan and Liz

Six intreprid souls journeyed to Crater Lake for incredible views and unique water phenomena.  As we reached the lodge parking lot, it was soon clear that it was not going to be clear at the top of Garfield Peak, but we headed up anyway just to check it out.

The wide trail was little steep in places, but not bad.  Plenty of sheer cliff drop-offs to keep you paying attention, however. The photos and videos give you good idea of what we experienced at the top.  Invigorated by the cold and wind if not the views, we headed back down to warm up and eat lunch at the 2nd floor cafeteria, which we had mostly to ourselves.

After lunch we drove north following the West Rim trail (where Dan pointed out some trails for future excursions) to Highway 138 and took the Highway 230 turnoff heading south.  The Boundary Springs trailhead has its own parking lot off Highway 230, easy to find.  We then headed down the trail through forests burned in 2017 that are definitely starting to recover.

We soon met up with a young Rogue River, looking big for just getting started.  An added bonus was a beautiful 30-foot waterfall close to the trail where we clambered down for a closer look.  One of our number got stuck -- literally-- in a bog as he tried to bushwack his way to nearby Boundary Springs.  The rest of us back-tracked to the trail and followed it the last 1/4 mile to the amazing gushing spring, more like a rushing stream coming straight out of the side of the hill, the birthsite of the Rogue. Look one way, and you see the spring, turn around and you see a fully formed river.

Heading home, we stopped at Jeffros BBQ in Shady Grove to load up on mouth-watering items.  However, since it was getting very late in the day, we decided to forgo the beers and fries.

Respectfully submitted, Liz
