Applegate Lake Loop 12-19-18

Eleven of us headed to Applegate to enjoy the great outdoors and have lunch at Hal’s point.  We decided to do an extra credit addition by hiking to the cable climb from the lake up to the trail.  Everyone made it and off we went to find Hal’s point for lunch.

It was in the low 40’s and overcast at the beginning, so it was colder than some of us expected.  On our way, we found a large pile of trash that had been dumped by someone or something.  Liz had seen it before and come prepared, so out came a big garbage bag and several people pitched in to clean up the mess.  The term “Trash Girls” seemed to be bouncing around in the wind after that, but not sure how it got started.

We made it to Hal’s Point, the sun came out and everyone was happy.  After a nice lunch, we decided to take a short cut across the reservoir itself to the road on the other side of the bay.  There was a creek crossing and several “muddy” spots, but everyone arrived dry and relatively clean on the other side.  We then headed back to the cars (the temperature was now in the upper 40’s) and off to Boom Town for refreshments.  We had an unexpected visitor during refreshments – John Kerr paid us a visit to wish us all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

It has been an interesting year of hiking, including several new hikers making it to the top of Mt. McLoughlin, too many hikes cancelled due to smoke, many great weather days with excellent views and many discussions on every topic under the sun, along with getting to know several new members to the group.  All in all, it has been a great year.  Thanks to all for joining us.  See you all next year.
