Monday Eclipse Party 8-21-17

Photos by Bob and Gladys, Video by Bob

A horde of Monday hikers and their groupies braved my 200 foot long driveway to welcome the eclipse. It took every inch of my massive granite island to hold the food, as apparently there had been a rumor of approaching famine. Everyone remembered their eclipse glasses and one enterprising groupie brought a welder's helmet. Excellent for viewing an eclipse unless you want to swill beer concurrently.

We were glad to welcome Keeley and his much better half from the Wednesday Group. I was anxious to quell rumors that a cattle prod is used on new hikers on Wednesdays.

Diane had warned me that few people would probably want to eat eggs and sausages with all that wholesome food around and she was right in that I only went through 4 dozen eggs and a few dozen of Taylor's best bangers.

The moon edged in front of the sun to oohs and ahs from the assembled multitude (actually more "pass the coffees" and "where is the loos?" than oohs and awes if the truth be known). As the moon covered more of the sun the temperature dropped to 60 degrees, setting off a panic among the California contingent. I sensed a rumble of moving feet towards the food and prayed that no one would be trampled in the rush. There was a mad scramble to polish off the scones and quiches etc and finally Joe Senter's famous chocolate cake. Actually Costco's famous chocolate cake but it was suitably decadent. The overall quality of the food was demonstrated by its disappearance in locust-like fashion.

Through all this the fair Susanna (age 4 months) was passed around more often than Elizabeth Taylor in her youth and seemed quite content to play the field. I am relieved that actuarially I may not have to suffer through her teenage years.

A great social day. Thank you everyone who attended a memorable event.

John
