Leave from the Safeway parking lot in Ashland at 9:00 AM unless otherwise indicated. Bring water, lunch, hat, sunscreen and rain gear as appropriate. January 4: White Rabbit/Alice-in-Wonderland Trails Loop (100 Hikes, p. 144)
TH: Top of Park St, Ashland; EDT: 10 min;
Description: Leave shuttle car in Safeway parking lot.  Take White Rabbit trail from Park St to upper TH on Ashland Loop Rd, then Alice-in-Wonderland and BTI trails down to Glenview Drive and on to Lithia Plaza for lunch in downtown Ashland.
Distance: 6 mi; elev. gain: 1200 ft. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 5 mi

January 11: Applegate Lake: Payette Tr from Squaw Ck TH towards the Manzanita TH RT
TH: Take Hwy 238 from Jacksonville area to Ruch (8 mi); take Upper Applegate Rd 15 mi to Applegate Dam; drive left across dam to Payette TH (about 2.5 mi); EDT: 60 min
Description: Walk 3.5-4 mi along the shore of Applegate Lake on the Payette Trail,  starting at the Squaw Creek TH, towards the Manzanita TH; return the same way.
Distance: 7-8 mi; elevation gain: about 500 ft. Weather forecast.  RT mileage: 80 mi

January 18: Snowshoe trip: Mt Ashland Ski Area to Grouse Gap RT
TH: Closed gate on FS Rd 20, just beyond Mt Ashland Ski Area parking; Sno Pass required for drivers (day pass ($3) or season pass ($20) available at DMV; slightly higher prices at sporting goods stores).  EDT: 30 min.
Description: follow level road (FS 20) to Grouse Gap; turn left to shelter for lunch; return same way. (Try not to snowshoe in cross-country ski tracks.) Cross country detour uphill (an additional 400 ft. elev. gain) to Rabbit Ears and back down ½ mile on the Mt. Ashland summit road is an option for those wishing more exercise
Distance: 5 mi.; elev. gain: around 500 ft. Big Red SNOTEL. Weather forecast. RT mileage: 35 mi.

January 25, 2013: Sterling Mine Ditch Trail (Tunnel Ridge-Bear Gulch loop) (100 Hikes, p. 152)
TH: Follow route 238 thru Jacksonville to Ruch; turn left onto Upper Applegate Rd 2.9 miles; turn left on Little Applegate Rd 9.7 mi to Tunnel Ridge TH; EDT: 75 min Description: Climb up to the Ditch, then turn left and follow the Ditch trail to the Bear Gulch trail; turn left again and descend to the Bear Gulch TH; turn left and walk along the road about 0.5 miles to starting point
